HOLY METROPOLIS OF PATRAS

BRIEF HISTORY

OF THE HOLY METROPOLIS OF PATRAS

The founder and evangelist of the city of Patras is Saint Apostle Andrew, the First-Called, who was martyred at the place where today stand two magnificent churches in his honor.

Gradually, Christianity developed, while the pagan religion declined, according to related testimonies and findings. From the late 3rd century, there is evidence of the existence of a Bishop of Patras. In the 8th century, the Diocese of Patras was elevated to an Archdiocese, and at the beginning of the next century, it became the Metropolis of Old Patras, which remained until the liberation of Greece, except for the period of the Frankish rule (1205–1267), during which Orthodox Bishops were expelled.
